When Valentina left her job in graphic design to care for her newborn daughter, she thought it would be a temporary pause. But between Venezuela’s worsening economy and the demands of early motherhood, five years passed before she considered returning to work.

Her biggest fear? That she had fallen behind – and that she had nothing new to offer the global market.

Today, Valentina works as a freelance UX designer for a Canadian edtech company. Her path back wasn’t paved by a return to college or a corporate rehire. It was built in quiet hours – after bedtime, during nap breaks, and through a patchwork of free online learning.

🎓 From Doubt to Design

Valentina’s re-entry into the workforce started with YouTube tutorials. Then came Coursera courses, Figma workshops, and finally a remote UX bootcamp tailored for women in Latin America. The program focused on real client work, team collaboration, and mentorship – equipping her not only with skills, but with confidence.

She built a portfolio by redesigning apps she already used: a budgeting tool, a baby tracking app, a nonprofit’s website. With each project, she sharpened her eye and her storytelling. Eventually, she landed a freelance role through a Latin American remote work platform.

👩‍💻 Reinventing Work Around Real Life

Valentina didn’t chase a “dream job.” She built a flexible, meaningful role that worked for her and her family. Today, she works 25 hours a week from home, sets her own schedule, and still picks up her daughter from preschool.

She’s not trying to “catch up” to a traditional career path – she’s creating a new one.

🌍 A Growing Segment of the Workforce

Valentina is part of a fast-growing demographic: highly capable professionals re-entering the workforce through remote-friendly, skill-based careers. In Latin America, where childcare options and formal job structures can be limited, online learning and freelancing offer an essential alternative.

And businesses benefit:

  • These professionals are self-motivated, organized, and tech-literate
  • They bring empathy and user-centric thinking, especially in roles like UX/UI, content, and customer experience
  • They understand the value of every opportunity – and are fiercely committed

💪 From Pause to Power

Valentina’s story isn’t about bouncing back. It’s about bouncing forward.

She didn’t wait for permission or the “right” job offer. She built her portfolio, marketed her skills, and landed work that respected her time and talent. She’s living proof that careers don’t have to be linear to be legitimate – or successful.
